Learn Your Home’s Architectural Roots from Benjamin Moore

Cape Cod

(1600-1955) Cape Cods are one of the oldest traditional American architectural home styles.

Early colonists in New England modeled the Cape Cod style after the countryside homes they left behind in England. The beautiful simplicity of Cape Cod design complements the style’s sturdy structure, which was built to withstand harsh, New England winters. Classic Cape Cod style homes are modest 1-story dwellings with dormers (windows set vertically on a sloping roof, which have their own small roofs). The windows on a Cape Cod are multi-paned and double-hung with shutters. These homes have a center hallway, one or more fireplaces, and hardwood floors.

Color scheme: Soleil AF-330 (siding); Blue echo AF-505 (shutters); Swiss coffee OC-45 (trim)

Dutch Colonial

(1625 – mid 1800’s) As the early Dutch settlers made their homes along the Hudson River in New York State, they built brick and stone homes that were reminiscent of those found in the Netherlands.

Original Dutch Colonial homes are not “true” colonial style homes – the name references the Dutch colonists that settled here. However, Dutch Colonial Revival style is a type of colonial style, blending elements of Colonial Revival and Dutch Colonial style homes. One of the most distinguishing features of a Dutch Colonial style home is the gambrel roof. The gambrel has four slopes; two at the top with a slight pitch, then another two along the sides that are longer, steeper and have a distinctive “flipped” edge. Original Dutch Colonial style homes included dormers which allowed homeowners the advantage of having almost an entire second floor without the construction costs and taxation levied on a two-story home. Other identifying features of Dutch Colonial style homes include clapboard or shingle siding, sometimes with a stone or brick front, small, round windows in the gable end, 8 over 8 windows, gable-end chimneys, and columns for porches and entries. Porches were usually placed under overhanging eaves, and while the overall shape of the home is symmetrical, many also have side entrances.

Lodge

(1630-1880, 1930-present) Most often seen in the Midwest and southern mountain regions of the United States, log cabin style homes were popular until the mid-nineteenth century.

Abundant evergreen forests in Northern Europe inspired immigrants who were from those areas to bring their homebuilding skills with them to America. Today, modern log-style homes are still popular in many resort areas in the mountain regions of the west and south.

The solid construction of log style homes makes them warm shelters from the harsh elements of cold, windy climates. Classic construction of these homes did not include nails. The logs were notched to fit together snugly, then any gaps that remained were tightly packed with fill that could include mud, sticks, and wood chips, also called chinking. Any opening such as windows and doors, were kept to a minimum to preserve heat. The main source of light and heat in traditional log homes came from the fireplace. Today’s log style homes have abundant windows, inviting natural light and beautiful views into the homes’ living areas.

Victorian

(1860 – 1910) There are numerous styles of Victorian architecture, and many Victorian style homes often include design elements from several of these styles.

The most elaborate of Victorian style homes were built between 1880 and 1890, during the then burgeoning Industrial Revolution.

Generally, Victorian style homes have an overall asymmetrical shape, with a pitched and irregular roof. Spindles on the porch posts are elements attributed to the Eastlake Victorian style, so named after the similarly styled furniture of famed English designer Charles Eastlake.

Queen Anne Victorian features are varied and can include bay windows, balconies, stained glass, turrets, porches, brackets and abundant details.

Color scheme : High park 467 (lighter siding); Garden path 466 (dark siding); Bordeaux red 1365 (trim); Brilliant white E-01 (trim)

Colonial

(1876-1955) Colonial style homes remain one of the most popular of what we consider classic American designs.

There are numerous home styles within the Colonial design genre, including Colonial Revival, Georgian Colonial, Federal style and Greek Revival. Many Colonials have several design elements from these various styles incorporated into a single home design.

 Colonial style homes are identified by their overall rectangular shape and symmetrical façade. Windows are multiple-paned and double-hung, often with shutters and, sometimes, dormers. Dormers are windows that are set vertically on a sloping roof, with their own small roof above them. Colonial style homes are typically 2 or 3 stories, with brick or wood siding. A paneled front door is often surrounded by side lights (narrow windows) and canopied by a portico topped by a pediment, which is a low-pitched gable.

Color scheme: Calming cream OC-105 (trim); Deep royal 2061-10 (shutters); Cottage red E-22 (siding)

Tudor

(1890-present) Tudor style homes reached a peak of popularity in the 1920’s and 1930’s and again in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

The architectural features of Tudor style homes evolved from medieval times. Such homes were constructed in a post and beam fashion, with roughly hewn lumber, and finished with plaster between the posts. While today’s Tudor style homes aren’t typically built in such post and beam construction, the look of these homes has been copied.

Tudor style homes typically have complex and steep roof lines, with plaster, stucco and sometimes stone or brick façades. Detailing includes “half-timbering” which are strips of wood frames on masonry that form a pattern. Tudor style homes also often have multiple chimneys that are both tall and wide and are typically topped with a decorative, round top. Windows are tall and narrow – some with leaded glass – and doorways are low and arched.

Color scheme: Brilliant white E-01 (trim); Sonnet AF-55 (siding)

Ranch

(1920-1970) Also known as a California Ranch, ranch style homes hit their height of popularity between the 1940’s and 1970’s.

With their clean lines, low to the ground profiles and unadorned exteriors, ranches were a blend of both modern and western styles. They reflected a shift in lifestyles from formal to casual, and celebrated the burgeoning desire to move out of the city to the more spacious suburbs.

Ranch style homes include a low pitched roof, deep-set eaves, large double-hung windows with a sizable picture window in the front, and sliding doors that open out onto a patio. Ranch style homes are typically 1 level, and have a rectangular shape with no basement.

Color scheme: Interlude AF-135 (siding); Townsend harbor brown AC-64 (shutters and front foor); White dove OC-17 (trim)

Contemporary

(1965- Present) “Contemporary” can be a relative term, since it refers to a period of time that is conditionally “recent” — a measure of time that is not fixed.

Architecturally speaking, Contemporary style homes have specific characteristics. Two styles of home often referred to as Contemporary include Post Modern and Neo Eclectic. While these two styles share many Contemporary elements, each has its own unique design, separate from the Contemporary style.

A true Contemporary style home has large, tall panes of glass for windows, which can be rectangular and sometimes trapezoidal. Typically, the overall shape of a Contemporary style home is irregular, lacking any real exterior ornamentation. Natural materials, such as stone, are often used to harmonize with nature, and most have flat or gabled roofs. Post Modern styles have greatly exaggerated modern elements, while Neo Eclectic styles infuse historic details into modern design – something you’ll never see in true Contemporary style.

Exterior surfaces: Common problems and their causes

Spring is almost here and the time for exterior preventive maintenance has come!!!

This task is inevitable for home owners since the weather affects all exterior surfaces in many ways. Such task can also become very expensive if  the weathering problems are not addressed periodically every 2-5 years as an average cycle for this region.The most common surfaces that suffer from abrasion and deterioration are surfaces such as wood, brick, stucco, vinyl, aluminum,  iron, concrete/cement. The common problems and their causes have been described below, so you, the home owner; can understand what is happening around your home and why. Now, what are the solutions and what systems are to be applied in order to prevent them? Alligatoring

Description: Patterned cracking in the paint film resembling the scales of an alligator.

Causes: (1) Application of a hard drying topcoat over a non-drying coating; (2) The top coat drying too quickly from being in the sun; (3) Natural aging of oil-based paints. As temperatures fluctuate, the constant expansion and contraction forces result in the loss of paint film elasticity and eventual cracking.

Blistering

Description: Bubbles resulting from localized loss of adhesion and lifting of the paint film from the underlying surface.

Causes: (1) Painting a warm surface in direct sunlight; (2) Application of oil-based or alkyd paint (oil based) over a damp or wet surface; (3) Moisture escaping through the exterior walls; (4) Exposure of latex paint film (water based) to a dew, high humidity, or rain shortly after paint has dried, especially if there was inadequate surface preparation.

 Chalking

Description: Formation of fine powder on the surface of the paint film during weathering, which can cause color fading. Although, some degree of chalking is a normal, desirable way for a paint film to wear, excessive film erosion can result in heavy chalking.

Causes: (1) Use of an interior paint for exterior application; (2) Use of an alkyd based paint (oil). In general, alkyd based coatings will chalk more than their latex counterparts. Use a latex coating if the structure is subjected to severe sun exposure.

Cracking / flaking

Description: The splitting of a dry paint film through at least one coat, which will lead to complete failure of the paint. Early on, the problem appears as hairline cracks, later flaking of paint chips occurs.

Causes: (1) Older substrates with multiple layers of paint; (2) Overthinning the paint or spreading it too thin; (3) poor surface preparation, such as not using a primer over bare surfaces prior to the painting; (4) Painting under cool or windy conditions that make latex paint dry too fast; (5) Use of low quality paints, which will not adhere properly and have poor flexibility.

Efflorescence

Description: It is often seen as a white fluffy deposit of salt crystals on cementitious wall surfaces. It depends on the presence of salt and moisture. The growth of crystals will continue as long as both are present. The salts are present in the mortar blocks or concrete structure and the moisture is usually attributable to some building defect. When emanating from mortar in brick or block buildings, efflorescence will appear as narrow bands corresponding to mortar joints.

Causes: (1) Failure to adequately prepare surface by removing all previous efflorescence; (2) Excess moisture escaping through the exterior masonry walls from the inside; (3) Insufficient curing time for new cement or mortar.

Fading / Poor color retention

Description: Premature and/or excessive fading of the paint color, which often occurs on exterior surfaces facing southern and western exposures. This is relatively easy to see because hidden areas such as eaves will not usually fade. Fading/poor color retention can also be a result of chalking of the coating.

Causes: (1) Colors will fade slightly when exposed to intense sunlight; (2) Use of an altered paint, leading to rapid degradation (chalking) of the paint film; (3) Use of paint colors that are vulnerable to UV radiation, most notably, lighter reds, yellows and oranges.

Mildew and algae

Description: Black, gray, or brown spots or areas found on the paint film or caulk bead.

Causes: (1) Continuously high humidity or dampness. As the humidity increases, mildew growth becomes more rapid; (2) High average temperature; (3) Poor ventilation. Still air increases mildew growth on any surface that provides a nutrient, even dirt; (4) Mildew occurs more often on light colors of paint film. colors that do not absorb the sun's heat provide a surface for mildew growth. Dark colors become hot and discourage mildew growth; (5) Cement based products are more prone to support algae growth. 

Peeling

Description: Paint or coating lifting from a surface due to poor adhesion. Peeling may involve one or several coats.

Causes: (1) Excessive moisture in the substrate – more likely if paint is oil based; (2) Painting over a dirty surface; i.e.-wax, mildew, grease, chalk; (3) Inadequate surface preparation; (4) Applying an oil based paint over a wet surface; (5) Earlier blistering of paint – see blistering; (6) Use of poor quality paints.

Tannin staining

Description: Brownish or tan discoloration appearing on the paint surface due to wood tannins migrating from the substrate through the paint film. Tannin staining typically occurs with "staining woods," such as redwood, cedar and mahogany, or over painted knots in certain other wood species.

Causes: All woods, but especially red-colored woods, contain a water soluble dye called tannin. Tannin is not soluble in most solvents. Application of latex topcoats directly to these red-colored woods may develop a red-colored stain on the finish coat. If the dry film is intact and discoloration occurs at a later date, then staining is being caused by water moisture within the board wall. This moisture will migrate and eventually carry staining substances from within the wood to the surface of the paint film.

Color Theory  

Learning the basic "language of color" will help you achieve your decorating goals.

Hue

Hue identifies the general family of a color, such as red, yellow, blue or green. The traditional color wheel is made up of twelve color families: red, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange, yellow, yellow-green, green, blue-green, blue-red-violet, violet and blue-violet.

Color Wheel

Colors on the opposite side of the wheel from each other are called complementary colors. In combination, these create striking contrasts. For less contrast, choose colors next to each other on the color wheel, which are called analogous colors. Choosing colors of different tints within one color family creates a monochromatic color scheme.

Warm or Cool?

Different colors in the same family may be described as being "warm" or "cool." Colors with yellow undertones will seem warmer, while the same color with blue or red undertones will appear cool. Cool colors – blue, green, violet – invite relaxation and thought. Warm colors – red, orange, yellow – encourage conversation and play. Experts suggest using both warm and cool colors in rooms where you desire balance and variety.

Value

Value describes how light or dark a specific color may be. On Sherwin-Williams color strips, lighter values are at the top, mid-tone values are in the middle and darker values are at the bottom. When you combine colors from a single color strip, you're creating a monochromatic color scheme – perfect for creating a sophisticated, spacious look in a single room.

How to Choose Colors

Begin at the Beggining

Determine what features or existing finishes in the room you would consider permanent. Consider the cabinets, tile or a brick fireplace. For example, if the wood of your kitchen cabinets has a red undertone, make sure the paint color you choose works well with that hue.

Create a Focal Point

Emphasize your home's attractive architectural features, such as crown molding or arched window treatments, with contrasting paint — lighter or darker than the wall — or by painting them with a glossy finish. You can also make one wall an accent wall by painting it a different color, giving it a faux finish, adding wallpaper or a border.

Unify the Color Flow

You can unify rooms by using a common color palette. Create distinct spaces by altering the shade and hue within the common palette.

Emphasize or Minimize

Color can emphasize certain features – and minimize others. A long narrow room will look wider if you use a slightly darker color on the shorter walls and a lighter color on the longer walls. You can make a ceiling appear higher by applying a lighter color, or lower with a darker color. To give a big room a more intimate feel, paint the walls in colors that advance toward you, such as red, gold, orange and brown. To help a small room seem larger, paint the walls in colors that make them appear to recede, such as blue, green or violet.

Reflect on Light Sources

Remember that the color you choose may look different at various times of the day and night. The warm tones of incandescent lights will have a different influence on the color than the natural light of day. Once you're aware of how different light sources can affect your color choices, you can change your room's "mood" to match the pace of your day.

Hiring and Contracting with a Professional

  Before you decide to hire the least expensive painter you can find, or "do it yourself", here are important points to consider that suggest the lowest price may not be the best value.

 

Safety:

Painting can be hazardous work, whether it’s working on a ladder or dealing with solvents and dust. Hiring a professional contractor means you don’t have to worry about these problems.

 

Health:

If your home or business was built before 1978, it may have been painted with lead-based paint, which can cause serious health effects when it is scraped or sanded in preparation for repainting. Professional contractors will take appropriate steps to protect you. Painting contractors are required to furnish EPA-produced pamphlets to their residential customers before they begin a job that involves disturbing lead-based paint in or on a residence. Professional painting contractors will understand and be willing to follow the recommendations on this pamphlet.

 

Preparation & Painting:

Getting the surface properly prepared makes all the difference. Professional contractors know the value of preparation and will do it right.

 

Knowing Paints and How to Apply Them:

The choices today are more complicated than just oil or latex, and professional contractors will know what works, how to use it, and will have the right tools for the job. Professional contractors utilize and partner with professional paint, coatings, and wallcovering suppliers.

 

Cleanup and Disposal:

Hiring a professional contractor means you don’t have to worry about dealing with paint residues and other leftovers. Professionals will know how to handle hazardous wastes that may be part of the job.

 

How to Choose the Right Contractor for Your Project:

Once you have decided to contract with someone to do a particular painting and decorating project, how do you go about selecting the right company? Do you make your selection on price, size of company, years in business, or other criteria? To locate the names of reputable contractors, there are many sources of information. Some of these sources are PDCA's Find a Pro search engine, friends, relatives, architects and design professionals, and local "quality- oriented" paint supply stores. However, these sources can only give you limited general information. In order to make an educated decision, you need some specific information about any person or firm you are considering hiring.

 

Always verify the contractor is licensed and insured:

Quality contracting firms will be only too happy to provide you with copies of their certificates of insurance. They should provide bonding information (if the job is large enough to require such) and documentation of safety training and compliance programs. Not all states and municipalities require licensing however business registration with your state and municipality is generally a minimum requirement.

 

Written Contracts are a Must:

Reputable contractors will encourage the use of a written contract. This contract should clearly explain the scope of the work to be performed. It should also cover such items as surfaces to be painted, methods and extent of surface preparation, time schedules for the project, and payment procedures. Knowing the total scope of the work enables you to carefully evaluate the different bids you may receive

with the proper information and keep them on a level playing field. The contract serves to protect both you and the contractor.

 

Invest Time in Verifying References:

Obtain a list of references from the prospective contractor. This list should include the contact person, address, and telephone number of the previous client. Follow up on this list with a phone call. Remember, the contractor will not give you a bad reference. Therefore, ask references if they know of any other work this contractor has performed. Be sure to ask whether the contractor and employees treated you professionally and with respect. The references you are interested in should be projects similar in size and scope to yours. Also, some of the projects should be at least a few years old. This will help you gauge the performance of the construction and materials used. If possible, try to see the work that was done. Discuss any guarantee or warranty programs the contractor may offer. Ask about the manufacturer's warranty on the products to be used on your project. Remember you are looking for long-term durability from the paint job. The use of high quality products is as important as the selection and performance of the contractor. Verifying references will provide a return on your project investment.

 

Is Your Contractor a PDCA Member?

Determine if your contractor is a member of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America. It has been in existence since 1884 and has over 3000 members all over the country and parts of Canada. The focus of the association is the education of its members and the promotion of professionalism within the industry. Look for the PDCA logo on your contractor’s business card, bid sheets, or trucks. The PDCA offers many programs for the education of painting contractors. This education includes training in the area of safety, business management, technical areas of painting and surface preparation, and more. Quality painting and decorating contractors are well educated on the different aspects of any painting project and that knowledge helps eliminate surprises.

Excellence in paint application is as important with your selection of a contractor as are the skills to properly manage their business and your project.

 

Not all Memberships Associations are alike:

National Associations such as PDCA and the Better Business Bureau are Non-Profit Associations who are interested in making the contracting world better, not just selling their products, which many marketing and sales type groups are in business for. PDCA is the only national association for painting and decorating contractors and one of the oldest contractor associations in America. Industry standards are another benefit of industry associations. PDCA produces nationally recognized Painting Industry Standards that cover many different aspects of a painting project. Use of these standards in proposals and contracts helps improve communication between the client and the contractor, assists in ensuring quality, and becomes a basis for evaluating the job’s requirements.

 

In Closing:

Good contractors are very eager for your business. They are also very proud of their craftsmanship. Once you have made your selection, step back and give the professional room to execute the project. You have both done your homework, so give the professional the opportunity to meet and exceed your expectations. Remember, as with anything else in life, you get what you pay for.
